In 2012 Stamford Shoestring Theatre brings four modern plays to our Stamford audiences. Hailed by The Sunday Times as "amongst the finest amateur reps in England…" Shoestring's offering for the spring is Joe Orton's classic black comedy Loot from 6 to 10 March at 7.45pm in the Stamford Arts Centre.
Hal's having a bad day. It's his mother's funeral, he's robbed a bank, he needs somewhere to hide the loot and the police are on his trail. His partner in crime, Dennis, is also the undertaker's assistant: they are trying both to get the coffin to the funeral and to hide the money. The arrival of Hal's late mother's nurse, who sees an opportunity to get her cut, further complicates the situation. When the police arrive to investigate the robbery, the cover-ups and lies become ever more elaborate. In the middle of all this, Hal's father, an honest and Christian man, is focused on trying to arrange a decent funeral and appropriate memorial for his wife.
Set in the mid 1960's, Joe Orton's anarchic black farce has no reverence for death or the recently departed, no respect for the Church and positively relishes satirising police brutality and corruption. 'Reading isn't an occupation we encourage among police officers. We try to keep the paperwork down to a minimum.'
Director Roger de Toney comments: "Orton's epigrammatic style has its roots in a long line of comedy playwrights from Congreve to Coward. No wonder that the critic of the Observer described him as: 'the Oscar Wilde of Welfare State gentility'."
Loot is adult, outrageous, offensive - and side splittingly funny. Don’t miss this classic!
